Mark Charles: Creating A Common Memory – SOLD OUT

“Where common memory is lacking, where people do not share in the same past, there can be no real community. Where community is to be formed, common memory must be created.”  – Georges Erasmus, an aboriginal leader from Canada
How did we get here as a nation? What if we need to go back to the beginning? Are we remembering rightly? The United States Constitution begins with the inclusive sounding words “We the People”, but it can be argued that it has never fully meant “All the People”. In this talk, Mark Charles unmasks and dismantles the Doctrine of Discovery that greatly influenced the founding of our nation and its founding documents. He then gives vision to how these unjust systems can be addressed. Join us for an evening working towards a deeper understanding of our need for a common memory of our history.
Location: Santa Rosa Jr. College – Bertolini Center for Student Leadership, Room 4643, 1st Floor
Students are FREE but tickets are needed due to limited seating – if you are a student, email Hilleary Zarate at [email protected] for a coupon code to apply at checkout.

Mark Charles is the son of an American woman of Dutch heritage and a Navajo man. He speaks with insight into the complexities of American history regarding race, culture, and faith in order to help forge a path of healing and conciliation for the nation. Mark serves as the Washington DC correspondent and regular columnist for Native News Online. Mark’s forthcoming book on the Doctrine of Discovery entitled “Truth be Told” (written in collaboration with Soong-Chan Rah) will be published by InterVarsity Press in 2019.
